Kenneth James Wittry, 69, died unexpectedly of a heart ailment on Feb. 2, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 6, at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday with a Rosary to be recited at 4:30 p.m. at the Brooks Funeral Care Chapel at 7975 University Blvd in Clive.
Ken was born in 1942 to parents B.A. (Barney) and Magdeline Snyder Wittry in Breda, Iowa. He graduated from St. Bernard Schools and attended Iowa State University. He was united in marriage in 1964 to Jane Nelson in Carroll, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Jane and by children Karman (Todd) Hotchkiss of Des Moines; Tony (Sonya) of Redwood City, California; Chris (Cindy) of Georgetown, Kentucky; Kandace of Marshalltown; Melissa (Matt) Gruhn of Nevada; Melanie (Andy) Dykstra of Naperville, Illinois; Benjamin (Melody) of Minneapolis; Nicole (Miro) Oljaca of Tucson; and Dr. Alex (Katie) of Iowa City. Ken also had twelve grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene, and brothers-in-law Gene Sweeney and Pat Nieland.
Ken was retired from the State of Iowa, having worked at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison for many years. He loved word games, and could fix just about anything--usually with an improvised tool. As his children were growing up he was very active in their activities, coaching many different sports. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments. Messages of Condolence may be left for the family at wwwBrooksFuneralCare.com.
